Following The Old Ghan, Part 1. Into The Unknown
Step back in time to 1950. You’ve said yes to a three month stint in the Red Centre. But first you have to get there on the Old Ghan!
Australia’s big, really big. Renowned for “the great outdoors”, wide open spaces, fresh air and friendly people. The ultimate destination for outdoor travels. If there’s one thing we do have, it’s space.
Most of us are squashed in a thin strip down the East Coast… and most of us have no idea what’s over the other side of the mountains – otherwise known as The Great Dividing Range.
So many East Coasters have never even been over The Range. They have no idea what lies to the West. They live, work and holiday on the East Coast.
Not that there’s anything wrong with this. But there are so many magnificent places not on the East Coast – The Nullarbor, Flinders Ranges, Karijini, The Kimberleys, Lawn Hill, South-West WA to name a few.
You’ll find most – but not all – of the places on this website are West of The Great Dividing Range. There’s just so much to explore. It would take 5 lifetimes to explore Australia from top to bottom. Once you start to travel Outback Australia, it’s gets in your blood. You’ll be hooked for life.
Enjoy.

Gary Junction Road camping spots. Where are they? What facilities are available and so on? All of your questions answered here.
Once you reach Gary Junction from the east, where to next? We chose the drive through to Marble Bar. An extraordinary journey.
Gary Junction Road runs across two deserts from the red centre of the N.T. into northern W.A. One of the great drives in Australia.
Pooncarie is one of those small towns you could drive through without really noticing. Stop & have a look around, it has a long history.
Somehow Chambers Gorge in the Flinders Ranges has remained a secret to most. We discovered a special place, virtually unknown by most travellers passing by.
Murray Sunset National Park runs along the Murray River, between Renmark and Mildura. Easy access to great bush camping!
It’s one thing to see footage of the NSW drought in the media. But it’s depressing and frustrating when you’re standing in the midst of it.
Tanami Road has a reputation of being boring, monotonous. We can’t figure out why, we loved it! A road trip across the Red Centre.
We visit Wolfe Creek Crater, near the western end of the Tanami Road in WA. The real story is far better than the movie script!
